ABSTRACT
Anthony Giddens has had a long-standing interest in the relationships between society and nature. My purpose in this chapter is to explore his influential work, to point out what I see as the contradictions and problems within it, and to set out a somewhat different conceptual framework for understanding what he calls 'life politics'. For illustrative purposes I will give special attention to the new reproductive technologies.
