ABSTRACT

Before starting on a design project, it is worthwhile taking the time to assemble the necessary materials. It is also advisable to decide which scale of drawings it would be most practicable to use and to draw a base plan from the official map of the area. Since site appraisal information may be presented to people who do not know the area well, or indeed at all, a simple diagram which locates the area within its town or city ‘sets the scene’. It is always useful to note the public transport movements throughout an area and their connections with the wider city and region. Microclimatic effects are accentuated by the topography, i.e. the shape of the landforms in the appraisal area. Walking or cycling up a steep slope into a strong prevailing wind can be daunting, particularly for the elderly or small children.
