ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a series of case studies to illustrate the ways in which an urban designer might take the analysis forward to develop a specific urban design proposal. The initial design approach was an investigation of local small urban settlements and their generic forms, as well as a site investigation that paid particular attention to nature conservation. As a new settlement, it was important that the new village could be constructed in discrete phases that could operate independently initially and thus a polycentric form was preferred. With the exception of the more important armature, guidance is given on the form of buildings – since this affects issues fundamental to the design strategy such as the nature of public space and energy consumption – but not on character or style.
