ABSTRACT

The requirements of the Regulations apply at any position where there is a difference in floor level in excess of 380 mm or a flight of two or more risers, and cover stairs, ramps and ladders that form part of the building. Landings must be provided at the top and bottom of every flight and may include part of the floor of the building. The width and length of each landing must be at least as great as the smallest width of the flight. Tapered treads in a stair to be used as the approach to a building used by disabled people must comply with the minimum going requirement listed above of 280 mm, and this is to be measured along a line 270 mm in from the inner edge of any flight. As any spiral or helical stair is a succession of tapered treads, can be used as the basis for a design.
