ABSTRACT

All flue pipes with spigot and socket joints should be fitted with the socket facing upwards. Flues should be run vertically wherever possible. Horizontal runs should be avoided except in the cases of a back outlet appliance, when the length of flue between the appliance and a chimney should not exceed 150 mm. A flue pipe from a solid fuel appliance must be separated from anything that might burn by at least 200 mm of non-combustible material or an air space of not less than three times the diameter of the pipe. Any free-standing solid fuel appliance must be placed on a constructional hearth that is of solid non-combustible material at least 125 mm thick. If the hearth is larger than the minimum that this would give, combustible material may be placed on it but no nearer than 150 mm each side and behind the appliance and 225 or 300 mm in front.
