ABSTRACT

Once within the confines of the building and its smaller spaces, the ambulant disabled person usually encounters less trouble than somebody in a wheelchair. The requirements for stairs for the ambulant disabled are almost identical to those for a stepped approach to the building. The only difference being that, being inside, the risers can be slightly greater, the total rise can be more and the going slightly less, resulting in a steeper staircase. The most suitable means of travel from one storey to another for a disabled person is a passenger lift. An important provision in a building to which the disabled have access is suitable and convenient sanitary accommodation. Since the aim is to provide access for the staff working in the building and for members of the public, suitable approaches must be constructed to the principal entrance and to any entrances intended for the exclusive use of staff.
