ABSTRACT

This chapter advances the discussion of the food supply system beyond the farm gate and into the food-processing, distribution and consumption sectors (see Fig. 1.1). Particular emphasis is given to two features of contemporary agriculture that were introduced in Chapter 1, namely the internationalization of the food supply system (p. 26) and the real and formal subsumption of agriculture (pp. 24) by external capitals in the food-processing and retailing sectors.
