This chapter covers the first three centuries of urban settlement in the United States of America, from its commencement by the Spaniards in 1565, through to the Civil War of 1861-5, which is taken as the watershed dividing the period of this volume and that of the modern industrial age in US urban history. I An introductory description of the Spanish, French and English settlement processes, together with general geographical, economic and social factors, is followed by accounts of individual city origins and growth during the period.
