ABSTRACT

It is assumed that only a standard reflecting microscope is available without modifications or additional equipment. If so, this can be an advantage, for it can be tempting to try to use the more complex techniques prior to comprehending and mastering the more basic methods. In the case of ore microscopy, as compared with the study of thin sections in transmitted light, the properties are qualitative (for the most part) and there is no substitute for experience. Time spent on examining as many different minerals as possible from as many different localities and environments will lead to proficiency with the technique.
