ABSTRACT
This list is not intended to represent the largest libraries of the time, but rather interesting cases of public, semi-public and private collections, which in turn enable patterns of scholarship and patronage to be traced. Private collections dominate the list, since the initiative in book collecting came from individuals rather than institutions, with many university libraries augmented by the bequest of private libraries.
