Chapters2--4wereconcernedwiththeexistenceofdifferentfootball nations(actualorlatent)withinonestate.Mostprofessionalfootball clubsaspiretoplayintheirownnationalleague;ifsuccessful,theycan takepartinoneofthecontinentalcompetitions.ForleadingBritishclubs 'gettingintoEurope'isamajorobjective.Forasmallnumberofclubs, however,playingabroadisforvariousreasonsthenorm;thischapter considersfootballclubs(notplayers)thatplayacrosstheborder.The increasingglobalizationofsporthasprecipitatedarapidgrowthin playersexercisingtheirtradeabroad.Duke(1994)hasdocumentedthe spreadofCzechoslovakandHungarianplayersacrossEuropeinthe early1990sandthereisagrowingliteratureonthetopicofsports migration(seeBaleandMaguire1994).
