Journeymen’s concepts of masculinity 179 of manhood, a definition achieved not only in opposition to notions of womanhood, but also to the ideal of m anhood proposed by reli­ gious and political authorities. This definition, I hope to show in this article, was at the same time anti-patriarchal and anti-female, providing those of us who have also criticized early m odern patri­ archy with some rather embarrassing bedfellows.
