ABSTRACT

This chapter considers those which relate to the relationships of gender, their associated divisions of labour and the ways in which perceived and analysed by sociologists. It focuses mainly on the British context. The chapter addresses the gendered inequalities in existing divisions of labour and to suggest some ways of researching which are more adequate for explanations of the persistence in the levels and forms of this inequality and for policy formulation. It reveals approach to the study of gender relations is based on the many contributions to social theory developed, particularly since the 1970s, by feminists. The division of labour has long been seen as central to the structuring of social relations. The systematic investigation of the interconnection of the division of labour found in employment with that found in other forms of work is central to the understanding of persistent and marked gender inequality and to the formulation of policies for removing it.
