ABSTRACT
In the early nineteenth century the Scandinavian countries were among the poorest in Europe, 1 and they were little affected by the fundamental economic changes which were going on in the United Kingdom and continental Europe during the first half of the century. Today the Scandinavian countries are highly industrialized. From an economic standpoint they are affluent societies, and they are considered by many to be the most advanced welfare states in the world.
