ABSTRACT

That small works do exist as a distinct class of building work is indisputable. This chapter provides a basis for defining small works in a more meaningful way than in terms of value alone, thus overcoming some of the differences in definitions stemming from distinct perspectives. Risk constitutes a means of discriminating between small works jobs in terms that are becoming more and more the norm for construction work in general where the analysis of risk is an essential tool in the repertoire of all those concerned with construction management. The relationship between the subgroups of small works can be understood in the form of a small works spectrum, incorporating a continuum of increasing risk, value, complexity and other factors. Most organisations do in fact recognise that different categories of small works exist. However, the categories often owe more to somewhat arbitrary or inherited traditional groupings than to classification according to the distinct characteristics of the item of work.
