ABSTRACT

The procurement route selection process is important because it is one of the major influences on the ultimate success of a job and is also one of the first decisions made affecting the undertaking of the work. A wide range of procurement options is available to the client who wishes to employ contractors to undertake the work, any one of whom might be suitable for a particular item of small works in certain circumstances. Each organisation must tailor its own bespoke solution to its small works procurement approach based on both its own characteristics and the facets of small works generally. Rightly or wrongly, time, cost and quality implications are often overridden by other decision factors as the basis for procurement route selection in small works. The piecemeal nature of small building works often poses difficulties where security considerations are relevant.
