ABSTRACT
In Britain, poverty is one of the causes of lone parenthood, as well as (in Britain) one of its most likely consequences. This is especially true in relation to single lone mothers. Lone parents and their children are among the poorest groups in Britain and there has been an association between poverty and lone parenthood throughout history (see Chapter 1). non-resident fathers also tend to live on lower than average levels of income (see Chapter 8).
