ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the execution of moderately sized works by a moderately sized local contractor. The provision and installation of the maxi-machine was by a direct contractor and was to precede during the contract works. The architect immediately referred them to the quantity surveyor, who established some baselines with the contractor over what would be included in his variation account. The nominated subcontractor presented his shop drawings to the architect, as a development of the architect's general arrangement drawings, which simply gave the main layout of structural work. These drawings were a revision of what the subcontractor had prepared when submitting his original tender. The architect rejected them, stating that the contractor should have noticed and was responsible for coordinating information and warning of discrepancies. The contractor's contention was that the areas of work between them had suffered from the ‘shadow’ effect produced.
