ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with some general points on teaching materials and their relation to grammars, with special reference to Germany and outlines some of the essential points of a corpus-based approach for the development of a grammar for the foreign language learner. English is the first and most important foreign language in German schools. Every student in German secondary schools has to learn at least one foreign language. The chapter presents three examples of new findings which affect the way in which grammatical items are selected, graded and presented in teaching materials. The first example is the teaching of any, the second example the description of will and would, the third example concerns irregular verbs of English. Irregular verbs belong to the most important parts of the English verbal system. They are especially important for the foreign language learner.
