ABSTRACT
Politics in Northern Ireland is articulated around the issue of national identity and allegiance, rather than around economic or class issues. The greater number are Unionist and wish to maintain the constitutional status quo, while a minority are Nationalist and aspire to Irish unity. Because of this fundamental division, elections within the province at local government, national and European level tend to be dominated by this question and are in effect referenda on nationality and allegiance.
