ABSTRACT

The clauses within the institution of civil engineers Conditions of Contract that refer to the quality of materials and standards of workmanship to be expected during construction are: workmanship and materials and the Construction Regulations 1994. The engineer is able to assess the standards of the materials and workmanship of the various components against those laid down in British Standards or Codes of Practice. The contractor should seek to ensure that competent tradesmen are employed to do the work and that they are properly supervised. The actual setting out of the works is entirely the responsibility of the contractor. The engineer has the power to suspend the progress of the construction works in whole or in part. Unless the suspension of the works is part of the contract, the contractor, within a period of 3 months from the date of suspension, may request to proceed with the works.
