ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the clauses from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Conditions of contract: contract documents and contractor’s programme. The conditions of contract seek to establish the legal framework under which the construction work is to be undertaken. Agreement is that part of the contract which the parties sign. The ICE Conditions of Contract contain 72 clauses that are grouped under 24 headings or sections. Upon signing the contract, the contractor will be provided with further copies of the contract drawings. A bill of quantities allows each contractor tendering for a project to price on the same information with a minimum of effort. The several documents forming the contract are described as being mutually explanatory. The engineer, under the terms of the contract, is allowed to revise or modify the drawings, specification and other documentation as may be required.
