ABSTRACT
The eighteenth century in Europe saw some very significant develop ments in linguistics, though again it must be remembered that any temporal localization within numbered centuries must be regarded in its proper context as no more than an approximative convenience. During this century trends already noticed in the Renaissance and post Renaissance world continued to develop.
