ABSTRACT

Mechanical systems for the movement of people and goods are now essential equipment in many types of building. In common with many other service installations, mechanical conveyor installations must therefore be taken into account from the very first stages of design. Four types of installation can be used in buildings such as lifts, escalators, paternosters and travolators. The essential features of a lift installation are a car to carry passengers supported on a cable running over a pulley and balanced by a counterweight. The DC current is usually generated from the mains supply by individual generators for each lift motor. Motor rooms are required for all except some special types of lift installation. Lift manufacturers publish tables of typical sizes which should be consulted as early as possible for layout and details of sound precautions. The power operation for sliding doors is usually by a small electric motor operating an arm through a worm gear and spur wheel.
