ABSTRACT

Mechanical systems for the movement of people and goods are now essential equipment in many types of building. Their spatial and functional requirements and the need to make the best and most economical use of the installation often exercise considerable influence on construction and planning and they may, as in the case of lifts for multistorey buildings, make new building forms possible. In common with many other service installations, mechanical conveyor installations must therefore be taken into account from the very first stages of design. A bewildering range of devices exists, particularly for the conveyance of goods, but the underlying principles of operation are relatively few and can be found applied both to the movement of people and goods. Table 17.1 shows the most significant forms of conveyors and typical applications.
