ABSTRACT

Precautions for fire safety in buildings involve not only alarms and firefighting equipment but also access, building form, materials of construction, internal planning and sometimes mechanical ventilation. Many of these aspects are interdependent and fire safety should be part of an integrated design process from the outset. The risks associated with fire and the complex technical considerations involved in the choice of suitable precautions mean that, in substantial buildings, many parties will be concerned in the conception and development of the design. In addition to the building owner, architect, structural and services engineers, the local authority and fire service, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the insurers of the building, and manufacturers and installers of equipment may have essential contributions to make. Even in the case of small buildings local fire services are normally very pleased to be asked for advice about fire precautions and it is sensible to take advantage of this at the early stages of design. All new buildings must comply with the Building Regulations and may also be subject to health and safety legislation.
