Printed in John Shurley’s The Compleat Courtier (1683), and in a setting by John Abell in Choice Ayres and Songs (1683; facsimile in Day 134); not collected until Poetical Miscellanies: The Fifth Part (1704). There are MS copies of the words in BL MS Add 30303, and of the setting in BL MSS Add 19759 and 29397. The present text comes from Choice Ayres, emended at 1. 5. The Compleat Courtier (‘C C ’) prints the song as three six-line stanzas; substantive variants in that text and in 1704 are recorded in the notes.
