ABSTRACT

Bombing raids against Gennany began in May 1940 (Fig. 5.9), following Hitler's invasion of the Low Countries and of France. They continued largely uninterrupted for the ensuing five years, becoming much more intense after the United States entry into the war and after the successful D-Day landings in.France in June 1944, In the single month of March 1945, British and United States planes dropped on Gennan cities twice the bomb tonnage that fell on Britain throughout the entire war.
