ABSTRACT
Franc;:ois Bedarida, the social historian, brought the study of contemporary history to prominence in France in the 19iOs and 1980s with his Institut d'Histoire du Temps Present. He chose the title 'history of the present' partly because, in France, 'contemporarv history' had come to mean 'since 1 i89'.
