ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses pipe sizing for heating, pump duty, single-pipe ring system, two-pipe system and micro-pipe system. Micro-pipe systems can be 'open' or 'closed' circuits. An open circuit is provided with an expansion and feed cistern with a cold feed and vent pipe, which are open to the atmosphere. A closed or sealed system dispenses with an expansion and feed cistern, and the open cold feed and vent pipes, and an expansion vessel is substituted in their place. This expansion vessel contains a diaphragm with nitrogen or air on one side and water from the heating system on the other. When the water is heated, the expansion is taken up by compressing the air. Examples are provided for calculating pipe sizing. These calculations will be helpful in essential design calculations for building services and equipment, which is the primary aim of this book. The book takes account of current building regulations, codes of practice and recent technological advances.
