ABSTRACT

Every habitable dwelling should have a piped supply of wholesome water controlled by a tap within the building. The pipework is installed with regard to waste prevention, contamination, damage from frost and corrosion; it should also have reasonable access for maintenance. These requirements are controlled by the local water authorities, who operate independently of local authority planning and building control departments. Each authority issues by-laws, most of which have been incorporated into nationally acceptable model by-laws. Figure 12.1 shows a typical supply service from the water authority's main to the householders stop valve within the dwelling. This incorporates provision for settlement of the main and contraction of the supply pipe, by snaking the branch pipe

close to the main. A rmrumum cover of 750 mm is shown as sufficient protection from frost and vegetation.
