ABSTRACT
This chapter, like the one that follows, will provide a survey of the field as it developed during the 1970s. Here the focus will be on the notion of interlanguage. This will not just be a historical survey but will also introduce some fundamental theoretical issues and methodological problems: for this reason detailed discussion of the empirical studies will, on the whole, be avoided so that the more essential problems may be highlighted.
