ABSTRACT
Libya became independent quite quickly after the Second World War. This was because the big powers could not agree on which of them should take the UN trusteeship of this former Italian colony. In 1951 the territories of Cyrenaica and Tripolitania were removed from British and American military government, and, with Fezzan, united as the kingdom of Libya under King Idris al-Sanusi.
