ABSTRACT
In the previous chapters, we have discussed the principal ways in which English adjectives may be related to the rest of the construction in which they appear. Nevertheless, there remains a plentiful supply of examples which show adjectives working in various minor ways which either are not or appear not to be classifiable under any of the headings given so far. We can take the following as a representative sample:
Ivan has both thumbs missing
furious, the inspector scowled at the harbour
Alice has got the machine working
the study door was found open
Richie-Hook was declared insane
Father came back $500 the poorer
three ogres were seen in the village
how could I eat with the children hungry?
the stream rippled gently in the sunshine, its waters cool and inviting
