ABSTRACT

The last three years of French rule in Algeria are ones of paradox and dramatic reversal of fortune. At the end of 1958 the ALN were approaching military defeat; by mid-1959 that defeat was almost total. Yet by July 1962 Algeria was independent, the FLN in control and French troops and colons in hurried evacuation to France.
