ABSTRACT

The Franco-Prussian War took place in 1870. For France, itended in defeat, the departure of Emperor Napoleon III and the proclamation of the Third Republic. For Germany, this war resulted in the achievement of unity in the form of the German empire with the king of Prussia as the German emperor and Prussia as the dominant power. This war had been preceded by another, the war between Prussia and Austria, which Prussia had also won, thereby putting an end to Austrian involvement in German affairs. From now on, Austria’s only sphere of influence would be the Balkans.
