ABSTRACT

With teacher training rapidly moving towards a more school-based model, the professional training in teaching skills for student teachers is increasingly becoming the responsibility of the class teacher or ‘subject mentor’ in the school. As Bolton (1993) points out, effective teaching necessitates, in all who undertake it: ‘… mentoring and training skills required in initial teacher training, the induction of new teachers, school improvement and professional development’, (p. 15)

What does the school mentoring role entail?

What are the skills and competencies required of those taking on this new role?

What specific help and guidance do new entrants to the profession of teaching PE need?
