ABSTRACT
Medieval canon lawyers, even more than civil lawyers, needed to create tools to analyse and solve the legal problems inherent in corporate organization and structure. Bodies corporate were among the most im portant clients that canonists dealt with. Ecclesiastical corporations ranged from the college of cardinals, religious orders, and cathedral chapters at the upper end of the hierarchy to individual monasteries, nunneries, confraternities, and parishes, toward its lower end.
