ABSTRACT

Chaucer chose the form o f a dream because it suits his questioning purposes so well. Dream poetry was fashionable and allows a great fluidity o f narration. He does not have to give tedious details o f how he got up, dressed, went outside to the stable, got his horse, etc. Dreams actually happen, as we all know, as a mixture o f realism and fantasy, told through a single individual whose word we must accept. Nothing in dreams can be proven and they usually have a certain mysterious remoteness.
