ABSTRACT

The mingled flow of business and ceremony — whose differences were hard to distinguish in the fourteenth century — continued uninter rupted after the death o f Blanche. Christmas was celebrated in 1368 with customary splendour. Cloth and robes were duly issued to all at court, including Geoffrey and Philippa Chaucer, whose work was often thus paid in kind. From now on there is a steady flow of docu ments recording such issues, other gifts, and the payments of annuities, to both Geoffrey and Philippa. Through them we are able to trace the outline o f their lives.
