ABSTRACT

Many schools perform a Nativity play of some kind at Christmas. This example offers a play on an Easter theme involving research and celebration of the Jewish Feast of Passover; but the methods and principles described could be very easily adapted to a Nativity or to a play which celebrates any religious festival. One possible story line which might evolve is illustrated in the diagram 'The Donkeyman's Daughter' below, which illustrates one possible way of pulling the work together and giving it narrative shape. This might be all the 'script' that is needed if children are not going to have all their lines written out for them. The diagram also shows the four possible locations within which the narrative would take place - i.e. the village, the temple and streets of Jerusalem, Pontius Pilate's palace and the Roman garrison.
