ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents the analysis of information exchange in contemporary bureaucratic processes that have been able to set the work aside from research in the area. The chapter attempts to integrate two frameworks, the pragmatics of information exchange, and the social-theoretical debate about client construction vis-à-vis transformations of the public domain. The integrated approach has been central to the selection and interpretation of data from hitherto unbureaucratic domains in the private sector, such as banks, educational institutions and even courier services, rather than concentrating on traditional bureaucracies and tracing the socio-historical origin or detailing the linguistic features of the text output. The social construction of client identity which provides an anchor point for examining the connections further, especially the ways in which is constituted in the discourse practices of institutions and their members.
