ABSTRACT

Treaty with France expands Prussian territories westwards and in central Germany in compensation for the cession of territory to France on the left bank of the Rhine in May 23, 1802. Haugwitz meets Napoleon at Schonbrunn, where the latter offers Prussia the electorate of Hanover in return for small parcels of territory for Bavaria and France in December 13, 1805. Stein proposes an Austro-Prussian alliance to drive the French from Germany July 27, 1808. A letter from Stein to this effect is captured by French troops. Frederick William leaves Berlin, which is occupied by French troops, for Breslau in January 22, 1813. In June 4, 1813, Armistice of Poischwitz with the French, but Prussia continues mobilising partly because of Napoleon's own efforts and also because she does not want to be overshadowed by Austria. The enormous size of the Prussian military commitment in the War of Liberation gives her authority at the peace settlement.
