ABSTRACT

This constant is termed the Modulus of rigidity or the Shear modulus (G) Hence T G (SHEAR MODULUS) [8.2]

8.3 Lateral strain. Poisson's ratio When a bar is subjected to a longitudinal stress a direct strain takes place in the direction of the stress. At the same time a strain will take place at right angles to the direction of the applied stress; this is termed the LATERAL STRAIN (Fig. 8.2). Where the deformations remain elastic,

the ratio of the lateral strain to the longitudinal strain will be constant for a given material. This ratio is called POISSON'S RATIO.
