ABSTRACT

As was seen in chapter 2, to understand the meaning o f an utter ance involves being able to determine its syntactic form. Identify ing a string o f words as syntactically well-formed is a process known as recognition. Parsing, on the other hand, goes beyond recognition by associating a syntactic structure to those expres sions that have been recognised. The two processes are intimately linked since both depend upon the use o f the same grammatical information. The present chapter illustrates this from the point o f view o f a simple grammatical description.
