ABSTRACT
One of the few statements which can be confidently made about ‘absolutism’ is that it was never English. Much definition has proceeded along the lines of what ‘absolutism’ is not. Whatever it was, it never took root north of the Channel. There is no reason to revise this traditional verdict: no one is suggesting that England was ‘absolutist’. It remains appropriate to ask if the Continent was.
