ABSTRACT
In his admirable critique of Jakobson’s ‘Closing Statement’ of the1958 ‘Style in Language’ conference, Derek Attridge1 has already discussed the model of linguistic functions presented by Jakobson in that memorable paper. The sections in which Jakobson discussed the functions of language also, naturally enough, form the pretext (or pre-text) for this chapter, which is on the theme of stylistics and functionalism.
