ABSTRACT
The reduction in the working week, the slow rise in living standards, and the growth of holidays with pay meant, at least for those in employment, an increase in the demand for ways of filling leisure’ time. (’Leisure’ is understood in this chapter to mean the occupations and amusements of people when not at (legitimate) work.) In addition, technological change offered new avenues of amusement and pleasure.
