The Pope, among other motives for severity, probably felt that who-ever killed the Count Cenci deprived his treasury of a certain and copioussource of revenue. Beatrice Cenci's iconic status in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as a symbol of heroic resistance to the Papacy is discussed in Appendix B. In Relation 48, after the sentence has been communicated, Beatrice and Lucretia 'passed sometime in the Conforteria reciting psalms & litanies and other prayers with so much fervour that it well appeared that they were assisted by the peculiar grace of God'. Lucretia readily complied with this invitatio.
