ABSTRACT

Abstract:. In this chapter the author gives the full co-operation of the naval authorities. St Clair Stobart publicised her experiences in organising hospital work in Bulgaria, Belgium, France and Serbia in an attempt to show that women could be of service, not just in base hospitals but also in flying ones, and placed in positions of command. Governments' direct intervention in maintaining standards of health in order to boost productivity was more conventional and less controversial. It created a Health and Welfare Section 'to convince employers that it is both good business and good management, to regard with sympathetic consideration the health and comfort of their employees'. The Committee considered the relationship between industrial health and industrial efficiency and advised the Minister in a series of reports; the prior establishment of a Welfare Section at the Ministry of Munitions.
